MARYLYN WOUDA's Flowers

    Additional Information

Mexican sunflower is a beautiful annual which is easy to grow from seed.

It is native to Mexico and Central America. Mexican sunflowers reach a height of 5-6 feet and they grow quickly but are not invasive.

Because they are tall, they are the perfect backdrop plant for a sunny garden! Their bright orange flowers look lovely behind plants such as zinnias, cosmos, and many others! The flowers measure 2 ½ - 3 inches across.

    Growing instructions:
If you want to plant the seeds directly in your garden in the spring, make sure the temperatures remain consistently above 55°F and that risk of frost has passed. Barely cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate. Germination takes 7-14 days.

This plant is not picky about soil, so you will not need to add special soil amendments!

You may even want to start seeds early indoors to give them a head start.

If doing this, start them 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost in your area. When you transplant the seedlings into your garden, space them 12-24 inches apart.

Our club member Marylyn Wouda, shared the photos of her blooming Mexican Sunflowers and has been enjoying all the pollinators who visit them - Butterflies, Bees, and hummingbirds.

Our club member Ellen Jasica enjoys her pink roses, the rose bush is 30 years old and her white Rhododendron bush is in full bloom  ~ "Great Job Ellen".

Garden Tips for Rhododendrons, they are an attractive, spring blooming bush that comes in several colors (purples, pinks, reds) and is fairly low maintenance.

Best to plant in Fall. Growing rhododendron is an exacting task, but with the right soil and location, the rhododendron bush will provide an optimum show. They do not like full morning sun in winter and does best when planted partial shade / on the north side of a building., Soggy and waterlogged roots are the main cause of plant failure. The rhododendron bush should not be allowed to go through the stress of wilting. Rhododendrons are a diverse group of plants Some species will get tall but the majority of Rhododendrons fall between about 3 to 6 feet in height

Our club members helped some of the residents create a “VALENTINE HEART”.

The hearts had cute net fabric on a wire frame which were decorated with flowers and ornaments.

When the hearts were done the residents enjoyed them in their rooms for Valentine’s Day.

It was a great success to share some LOVE!

            Great Job Team!
