Our Des Plaines IL Garden Club wreath presentation

Our Des Plaines IL Garden Club was honored to participate in the 2025 Des Plaines MEMORIAL DAY remembrance services to recognize all the men & women who served and died in all our wars ~ it was held Monday, May 26th, at Lake Park, 2200 Lee St., Des Plaines, where we presented our Des Plaines Garden Club’s Memorial Day wreath.

All our Des Plaines, IL residents who perished in service are listed on the wall, their service will never be forgotten. "Say their name, lest we never forget their price."

Our club was represented by Mary Peglow, Jan Goczkowski, Dianna Edwards, and Karen and Ray Holich

Congratulations to Des Planes Garden Club member Ray Holich

Our Des Planes Garden Club member Ray Holich was honored this year for his military service and was chosen by the VetsRoll ~ 2025 organization

...which took Ray on this four-day memorable journey to see the memorials in Washington, D.C. The Tour consists of visits to:· AFB AIR MUSEUM· WWII MEMORIAL· VIETNAM MEMORIAL· KOREAN MEMORIAL· ARLINGTON CEMETERY · LINCOLN MEMORIAL. Ray just returned and received many good wishes from all his clubs in his “Mail Call”!At the Vietnam memorial, he even shook hands with a real, live Congressman from the Sycamore area. So far, VetsRoll has taken 2680 veterans to DC.* Hotel rooms 8490* Meals served 64,200* Miles traveled by convoy 360,400* States served 38. This trip had veterans from 16 States. This year, there were veterans from WWII, ‘Rosie the Riveter’ from WWII, and Korean and Vietnamese eras. Two of this year’s WWII veterans & a Rosie are each 100 years old. One WWII vet was in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He is an Orthopedic Surgeon. Plus, there were 6 from the Korean War.Ray was in the Coast Guard from 1969 to 1973. Most of his time was in Texas. 10 months on the Cutter Valent, now located in Miami, and two and a half years on the small boat station in Freeport, Texas as an Electronics Technician. Ray asked us to share with the clubs that VetsRoll is looking for veterans for next year. Thanks for your support, Ray, and Happy Memorial Day to you and all our Veterans.

Community Backpack Project /CBP

The Community Backpack Project (CBP) received a generous donation from the Des Plaines Garden Club.

Pictured at the club's holiday luncheon are (l to r) club representative Mary Peglow and CBP coordinator Jana Haas. The Garden Club has donated a total of $3,400 to the CBP this year, in support of District 6

***************************************

The Community Backpack Project (CBP) is an outreach program of the Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Elementary students in Community Consolidated School District 62 who are in need can take home a backpack full of food to last through the weekend. These are students who participate in the free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch program at school during the week.

How CBP Works

School social workers communicate with the CBP on the number of backpacks they need each week. Only the social workers know who the students are. The CBP fills the backpacks with easy-to-prepare meals such as oatmeal, canned soup, instant pasta dishes, canned protein, applesauce, snacks and juice. Volunteers deliver the backpacks to each school and they are given to the students to take home and then to return empty to be filled for the next weekend.

Thanks From the city of Des Plaines, il

Congratulations to Katelyn Dahl, a 2024 Maine West High School graduate in Des Plaines, IL. Katelyn is our Des Plaines Garden Club’s inaugural 2024 scholarship winner.

We honor Katelyn’s achievements in her field of environmental science.

Katelyn was selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants and has been recognized for her outstanding performance.

Katelyn will continue her academic career in environmental engineering this fall at Louisiana State University.

Thanks to our club’s scholarship committee for a great job: Pam Mazzini, and Mary Peglow
